Find out what are the differences and similarities between AirPods and AirDots Pro, Apple and Xiaomi headphones

The Apple AirPods , the wireless headphones from apple,have a number of competitors, but none of them are as “similar” as the Airdots Pro , launched by Chinese  Xiaomi . When you place them next to each other, you notice the incredible similarities of design, but what about the differences? Yes, they exist and we list them all below.

What is the difference between Apple AirPods and Xiaomi Airdots Pro?

1. Design

Introduced in September 2016 , Apple AirPods  are similar to good old EarPods , the Cupertino giant’s wired headphones, with the obvious advantage of being completely wireless. Although they have a controversial look, with a stick-shaped body, not exactly ergonomic, the headphones are in-ear and were designed to fit the ears of any user (without erasers).

The AirDots Pro , introduced in December 2018 by Xiaomi, are an update of the previous AirDots , more similar to Samsung’s Gear IconX . These were, like the Korean company, solutions in themselves, with internal music storage and dispensing with the cell phone as a constant companion. But in AirDots Pro (current), Xiaomi chose to do the same thing as Apple, presenting wireless headphones that depend on a cell phone to work. Both have no internal memory.

Visually, they are very similar. It’s unnecessary to say that the design of the AirDots Pro is a blatant copy of the AirPods (the “kibe”, incidentally is a standard behavior of Xiaomi), even though come with the classic erasers that can be exchanged. THE advantage, is that the user can choose those that best fit his ear, unlike Apple headphones, which is an “all or nothing” case.

2. Connections

Apple Airpods

Apple AirPods

AirPods connect with any Apple device, whether iPhones and / or  iPads ( iOS 10 onwards), Apple TVs (tvOS 11 or later), Apple Watches (watchOS 3 or later) or Macs (macOS Sierra onwards), and with a little effort, even with Android phones (!), since they are just ordinary Bluetooth headsets.

As they use the Bluetooth 4.2 standard, AirPods are able to play music and answer calls normally, but when used with an apple gadget, it is possible to have access to extra features, such as the Siri virtual assistant  .

AirDots Pro also uses Bluetooth 4.2 (interestingly, the previous generation used the 5.0 standard), and can be used with Android devices and Apple gadgets as usual, like any other wireless headset. Identical too, at this point.

3. Performance

Although it is possible to use AirPods with other non-Apple devices, they were developed to work better with iGadgets : by putting them on the ears, they automatically start to play the audio from the iPhone; when one is removed, the sound is paused, and when removing both, playback is interrupted, without the user using commands.

In addition, if the user uses the AirPods, iPhone and Apple Watch at the same time, the headphones will be connected to the two other gadgets automatically, effortlessly.

Xiaomi / Airdots Pro / Apple Airpods

Xiaomi AirDots Pro

The AirDots Pro, in turn, bring a feature called Unilateral Mode : the user can answer calls with just one headset, while the other company for a friend, who continues to listen to music. The transmission care was taken into account and the Xiaomi headphones have a 7 mm neodymium driver and titanium-plated diaphragm.

4. Autonomy

The AirPods battery supports up to 5 hours of audio playback , while the AirDots’ battery can handle up to 10 hours of use. Note that the case that stores the Apple earphones keeps another 24 hours of charge and, after spending  15 minutes  inside the case, you get 3 full hours. Xiaomi guarantees that  10 minutes of charge in the case will inject another 70 minutes of energy into your headphones. Chinese headphones last longer.

5. Price

AirPods are more expensive: in Brazil, Apple headphones cost $ 1,499 in the official store , while AirDots Pro are priced at the equivalent of $ 221 in China , without import taxes (Xiaomi no longer operates in the country). To buy, you need to import them.

Which is better, Apple Airpods or Xiaomi Airdots Pro?

AirPods are undeniably superior when connected to an iGadget, however, AirDots Pro are very similar, have unique features, and are cheaper. Thus, Apple headphones make more sense for an iPhone user , while those from Xiaomi are more suitable for those who are also on Android .

How to pair the Xiaomi Redmi Airdots [left side without sound]

How to pair the Xiaomi Redmi Airdots [left side without sound]

Find out how to pair Xiaomi Redmi Airdots or Mi Airdots; Chinese wireless headphones that can fail the left side

The Xiaomi Redmi Airdots is a wireless headset (true wireless) of the cheapest and with great cost benefit. Sometimes, however, buds can fail to answer calls, listen to music, or activate voice assistants. This is because Xiaomi in-ear headphones have a main side that mirrors the audio to the other phone. To resolve, you need to pair again before using the headphones back.

The headphones of the Chinese manufacturer have Bluetooth 5.0 technology, this means that the device will be connected automatically from the moment it is removed from the case – as long as it has ever been paired with the same device. If this is not happening or only one side (the left) does not work, make the adjustment.

How to pair the Xiaomi Redmi Airdots

The normal process of using them for the first time will be:

  1. Remove the two buds from the case and leave it next to the cell phone;
  2. Activate Bluetooth on your smartphone and wait for the phone to be found;
  3. Touch “Redmi AirDots_L” or “Redmi AirDots_R” to pair;
  4. In a few seconds the pairing will be completed, the headphones will be ready.

But, if it doesn’t work. You will need to reset the connection by resetting the settings.

  • First of all, leave both buds charged to avoid any suspicion of a missing battery. If the right phone is not charged, it will not work.
  • Disconnect and clear Bluetooth information on your device (forget it).

How to reset Airdots [reset]

This reset can resolve pairing conflicts on the headphones. This is about stereo operation, over time there is a loss of pairing between the two headphones (left and right), due to prolonged use of a single driver or when one of the two headphones is completely discharged from use.

  1. Put the buds back in the case;
  2. Access the Bluetooth settings on the cell phone and remove the pairing; In the list of devices, tap on the gear icon and on “Redmi AirDots_R” and click on “Unpair” or “Forget“. Then, disable the Bluetooth function.
  3. To reset Airdots to factory default, remove the earphones from the case;
  4. Press the physical button of both, at the same time, for a few seconds (from 20 to 30 seconds) or until the LED lights flash red for 2 times;
  5. The handset will be flashing the red LED, your Airdots has been successfully reset.

Why do I need to press for so long? When you take the headset out of the case it will automatically activate. You need to turn it off by pressing the accessory. You can do it with one side at a time or with both at the same time (simpler).

After resetting the two headphones, place the buds in the charging box again and leave them for at least 5 seconds before trying to pair again.

As one side (the right) is the main one, choose the name “Redmi AirDots_R” in the Bluetooth headset settings on the smartphone and wait for the pairing to complete. When the LED goes out, the phone and the headset are already connected.

This should solve the problem both on the Xiaomi Redmi AirDots (physical buttons) and on the Xiaomi Mi AirDots (touch). Note that in Brazil, Xiaomi Redmi AirDots was named Mi True Wireless Earbuds Basic and Xiaomi Mi AirDots is Mi True Wireless Earbuds.

How to connect two headphones or speakers to the same smartphone via Bluetooth

With the popularization of Bluetooth sound devices in general and, more specifically, True Wireless headphones (TWS), the desire arose to connect two headphones or boxes to the same smartphone via Bluetooth. Find out how here!

With the popularization of Bluetooth sound devices in general and more specifically the True Wireless headphones (TWS) , something recent, there were doubts in the social networks that I participate about their simultaneous connection through the use of a single smartphone. In this tutorial I will try to solve this impasse by showing possible ways to accomplish this task in the Android operating system .

The Bluetooth 5.0 enables over a wireless audio device to connect to the smartphone. However, for this to be possible, the first condition is that both the cell phone, the headset or the speaker have version 5.0 of the wireless connection protocol.

How to connect two headphones or speakers to the same smartphone via Bluetooth

There is a possibility that the phone used by default is accepting only one Bluetooth device connected at a time to the device. In order to be able to change this limit, it is necessary to activate Android “developer options”. Follow the steps below to access the developer settings on your smartphone:

  1. Access in Settings> System> About the device (or about the phone );
  2. Search for the “version number” of the operating system (MIUI, EMUI, Samsung OS, Oxygen OS, Android One, etc.)
  3. Press (click) it 7 times in a row in this option;
  4. A notification will appear notifying you that the developer option has been activated;

To access the developer options, you must go to Settings> System> Developer options, where you will have the option “Maximum number of Bluetooth connected audio devices” (it is in the “networks” section, you can use the search magnifier to find it easier). From there you can change to the maximum number that your mobile device allows for simultaneous Bluetooth audio connections.

Each phone may behave differently with respect to the media commands from the headset or speaker during music playback. Do the tests and report the result here. In the case of Samsung cell phones of the Galaxy S line, there is already an implementation of “Dual Bluetooth Audio” for the connection of two headphones at the same time.

There is also the option to connect a Bluetooth receiver / transmitter to your smartphone to use two audio devices at the same time (” Bluetooth transmitter / splitter “). Check the list of some models below for purchase:

  • Avantree Audikast
  • Avantree Oasis Plus
  • Besign BE- RTX

The different types of devices and the various ways of transmitting music

The different types of devices and the various ways of transmitting music

Many currently use the smartphone as the main and unique way to listen to music. But what other devices and ways do we have to enjoy a good album?

Nowadays, perhaps people think that the best way to listen to music is through a smartphone, after all, it is an all-in-one solution. However, for those who want more sound quality or even more convenience, there are several options that can make listening more enjoyable. The solutions range from using accessories in conjunction with cell phones to devices dedicated only to the audio playback function.

The different types of devices and the various ways of transmitting music

DAPs (Digital Audio Players)

You may know them under the name of MP3 Player, but these audio devices today do much more than that! Today, these music players are capable of supporting various audio file formats such as FLAC, DSD, ALAC, WAV, among others, in addition to having extra functions such as USB DAC , Bluetooth receiver and transmitter, support for music streaming services etc. .

Although DAPs have several functions, this is not all that they have to offer. These digital players have, in most cases, buttons dedicated to controlling the music such as play / pause, next track / previous track and volume increase / decrease, in addition to a touch screen to view albums, song information and other information such as the activation or deactivation of functions, equalization, among others.

Going to the hardware, depending on the player model, there is a superior quality both in the DAC chip and in the amplification section (stronger). In addition, there are manufacturers who are concerned with the design of the integrated board, with a better separation of components, which are of quality, where every detail is thought to have a better performance in audio.

When we stop to analyze the battery life of DAPs, we see that depending on the amplifying power of the devices, the lithium-ion cells provided power for more hours or less hours. The players with stronger amplifiers, usually have a duration of approximately 10h, whereas the weaker devices in this regard, can last, for example, 50 hours or even longer.

Examples of DAPs:

  • Cayin N3
  • Cayin N5 II
  • Cayin N6 II
  • Cayin N8
  • Cowon Plenue D2
  • Cowon Plenue L
  • Cowon Plenue R2
  • FiiO M11
  • FiiO M15
  • FiiO M5
  • FiiO M6
  • FiiO M9
  • Hiby R3
  • Hiby R5
  • Hiby R6
  • iBasso DX160
  • iBasso DX220
  • Sony Walkman NW-A105
  • Sony Walkman NW-WM1A
  • Sony Walkman NW-WM1Z
  • Sony Walkman NW-ZX500

Bluetooth Receivers

Bluetooth receivers , although still little known, are an excellent alternative for those who want to transform the wired headset into wireless. Basically they internally have a Bluetooth chip (to receive and decode the signal), a DAC, an amplifier, an output for SE headphones (single-ended) of 3.5mm, a balanced output for headphones (some models have) of 2, 5mm, a microphone (to answer phone calls or turn your headphone into a headset), a screen (some have it) and physical buttons (for music control).

These Bluetooth devices are the size of a cigarette lighter or even smaller depending on the model. In addition, they are able to improve the sound quality compared to the DAC / amp integrated in the smartphone board depending on the model. Thinking of these advantages added to the ability to be able to move freely (it is possible to fasten them on clothes) due to wireless technology, they are an unbeatable accessory compared to the unified solutions of the gamer heasets .

Examples of Bluetooth receivers:

  • Earstudio ES100
  • FiiO BTR1K
  • FiiO BTR3
  • FiiO BTR5
  • UBTR FiiO
  • Hiby W3
  • Hiby W5

USB DAC / amp

A USB DAC / amp can be mobile or desktop. When your project is designed for mobile use, it is interesting to see the performance offered in terms of perceived sound quality (depending on the headset, it may be more or less noticeable due to the greater or lesser need for amplification) when connecting to a cell phone , especially when we realize that the smartphone does not have enough power to make the headphone play well . Remembering that the mobile device can also be used in notebooks, computers or tablets.

Examples of mobile USB DAC / amp:

  • Hidizs S3
  • Hidizs Sonata HD II
  • iBasso DC01

There are models of desktop DAC / amp, which can be powered only through a USB port, but are not considered ideal for charging, due to their shape and / or size. However, there are those that have a USB output with the function of only receiving data, from the desktop or notebook, in addition to a separate source to plug into the outlet. That is, in this case, the device is really fixed.

Normally, DAC / amps have a headphone output (or two if there is a balanced one), a gain control (low, medium and high, which should be chosen according to the need for amplifying the phone) and a knob (cylinder ) to control the volume.

Examples of desktop USB DAC / amp:

  • Apogee Groove
  • Chord Hugo
  • Chord Mojo
  • Earstudio HUD100
  • FiiO K5 Pro
  • iFi Micro Black label
  • iFi Nano Black Label
  • JDS Labs Atom
  • Schiit Audio Fulla 3
  • Schiit Audio Jotunheim

Multifunctional Bluetooth Transmitter

Basically it is a USB DAC / amp, generally having more input options like coax, optics and RCA , adding a Bluetooth transmitting / receiving antenna. In this way, it is possible to connect it to a desktop, a notebook or even a TV to send audio through the smartphone or receive audio to listen using a headset or a Bluetooth speaker.

7 advantages of using Bluetooth headsets

7 advantages of using Bluetooth headsets

Learn about some of the main advantages of using Bluetooth headphones. Click here to check out our top tips!

Although not really a type of novelty, Bluetooth headsets are still not as widely used by most consumers today. Many are concerned with the price, battery life and sound quality of these accessories, even though all these factors have already been resolved or improved over the past few years.

Nowadays, there are far more advantages in leaving wired headsets behind and start using Bluetooth technology, whether for the sake of comfort, practicality or even for portability. But if you are still afraid about Bluetooth headsets or have questions about their features and benefits, just check out our list below!

1. Wireless

7 advantages of using Bluetooth headsets

The most obvious advantage of using Bluetooth headphones is that you will never have to worry about wires again. Of course, you will still have a USB cable to charge the battery of your headset, but this does not compare with the problems with the permanent wires of ordinary headphones.

This is especially true for those who usually carry the phone in backpacks or bags and always end up tangling the cord in other accessories, something that usually damages them after some time.

In addition, wireless headphones are ideal for people who like to exercise while listening to music on the smartphone. After all, the wire will not be bothering you and there is no chance that it will interfere with the physical activity in question.

2. Durability

Speaking of damaged wires, we have to mention the fact that Bluetooth headsets have a much better durability than conventional headphones.

With Bluetooth technology, you do not run the risk of the cable being in bad contact after a few months, so it is only necessary that you do not drop your phone on the floor to ensure good longevity.

In addition, it is important to note that in relation to Bluetooth headphones, unfortunately the price is directly related to their quality. A little more expensive headphones should last longer and even present a sound quality really superior to cheaper models, so remember to consider these factors when buying yours.

3. Longer distance

Another great benefit of Bluetooth headsets is that you can connect them to the device you want and still be a good distance from them if you prefer. After all, you are no longer stuck at the maximum distance according to the size of your headset wire.

Currently, it is possible to find models that allow a good distance without losing the signal. This is perfect for those who do not like to carry their cell phone around the house or a room to continue listening to their music for example.

Bluetooth technology has been improved for years, ensuring greater signal stability, extending the distance of its operation and really putting itself far ahead of traditional and wired devices.

4. Portability

Pioneer SE-MS7BT

An important factor of Bluetooth headsets is that they have a much better portability than ordinary headphones. Since there are no wires, you can place them in any space and in any way, without the constant concern of them being damaged. Otherwise, the larger versions are usually foldable and very flexible.

5. Use on multiple devices

As much as it is not a problem, removing and placing the wire from your headset on several different devices can be a bit irritating, in addition to possibly damaging the wire, negatively affecting durability, as we mentioned earlier.

This is especially true for those who are performing multiple tasks at the same time and need to be alternating the use of the phone. The Bluetooth headset can be synchronized with several different devices at the same time and is immediately recognized when you need to use it on one of them.

6. Compatibility

Another benefit of Bluetooth headsets is that they work perfectly on any electronic device that has this technology, be it smartphones, tablets, computers or even game consoles.

Considering that several devices are no longer including wired headsets, this turns out to be a good advantage for Bluetooth.

If you consider even the most modern smartphones from Apple, you could say that wired headsets are really a thing of the past and Bluetooth really started to replace this technology.

7. More discreet

bluetooth headphones

Finally, it is also worth mentioning that wireless headphones end up being more discreet in everyday use. Of course, there are several models of headphones much larger, but even in these cases you end up having a good description of where your smartphone is stored, for example.

This brings extra security when you are away from home and even avoids situations where the earphone cord pulls the phone unintentionally, which can even cause the device to end up falling on the floor or some similar situation.

You can also be spied on by the headset

You may have seen some techniques for avoiding spying, such as plugging the laptop’s microphone and putting tape on the webcam –  this is done, ironically, by people like Mark Zuckerberg . But few people remember another device that can be used to listen to your conversations: the headset. Even though it has no built-in microphone.

You can also be spied on by the headset

The idea is simple: most headphones have small membranes. Your computer sends electrical signals over the wire, and the membranes vibrate to turn them into sound waves. However, this can be reversed: if you have already plugged a headset into  the PC’s audio input by mistake  , you realized that it was still possible to pick up sound, because the vibration of the membranes was transformed by the computer.

Well, researchers at Ben-Gurion University in Negev, Israel, have created experimental malware that can change the settings of Realtek sound cards – which is most likely the manufacturer of your card. They demonstrated that it is possible to make the audio output act as an input, turning a headset into a microphone and allowing a malicious person to overhear your conversations.

According to  Wired , the researchers were able to hear conversations recorded from six meters away through a Sennheiser headset. These recordings, of course, can also be compressed and transmitted over the internet. So, in possession of some embarrassing speech from you, a hacker can threaten you and ask you to commit crimes, which is very Black M… ok, no. But the threat is real.

This may be very paranoid, but if you are a person who covers the webcam and microphone, remember to disconnect your headset as well.

The problem with wireless headphones: they can explode

Last year, the Galaxy Note 7 fiasco made it very clear that lithium-ion batteries can be explosive. Battery-powered gadgets are also susceptible to this problem.

The problem with wireless headphones: they can explode

According to the Australian Transport Safety Bureau , an Australian agency that takes care of the country’s transport safety, a woman got burns and blisters after her headset exploded on a flight.

Two hours after the flight from Beijing to Melbourne took off, the passenger was sleeping and listening to music on her headphones when she heard a loud explosion. Soon after, she felt a burning sensation on her face.

“I continued to feel a burning sensation, so I grabbed the headphones and threw them on the floor. They were sparking and had small amounts of fire,” she told ATSB.

The flight attendants poured water over the headphones, which was placed in a bucket at the back of the plane. The batteries and the body of the device melted and stuck to the aircraft floor. He released toxic smoke that made passengers cough for the rest of the flight, which took place on February 19.

ATSB strongly suspects that the problem was with the batteries, not the device itself. The agency did not reveal the name of the passenger, nor the name of the airline, nor the brand of the headphones.

As The Verge recalls , batteries and lithium batteries are susceptible to what is known as “thermal escape”. An increase in temperature – caused by an internal failure or an external source – can cause the electrolytes to react with the other chemical components in the battery. This creates a gas that raises the temperature, creating a cycle that can lead to fires and explosions.

Therefore, it is important to avoid unreliable brands, and to check if your electronic products have passed security tests. This will become increasingly important for headsets as smartphones lose the traditional 3.5mm jack and encourage users to adopt wireless audio devices – and with batteries.

How to open an app on Android when connecting the headset [AutoPlay]

Learn how to open an app with your headset; just connect and automatically you’ll be listening to music

It’s a routine: unlock your phone, plug in your phone, open Spotify (or Deezer, or YouTube, or another app of your choice) to listen to music. You can shorten the path by having Android open a certain app when you connect the headphones automatically . Wired or bluetooth, from any manufacturer.

To do this, you will need to download the AutoPlay Bluetooth & Headphones . Or another similar application like Bluetooth Autoplay Music or Bluetooth Autoplay for Android.

How to open an app on Android when connecting the headset

Once this is done, you will define which application should be opened when connecting your headphones (wired or wireless). It could be Spotify, YouTube, Deezer, any of them.

How to open an app with a headset

  1. Download one of the apps (Bluetooth & Headphones);
  2. In “Selected App”, choose the application that will be opened;
  3. Activate the key “Start app after every connection”;
  4. If your phone has wires, in “Headphones”, activate “Start app after connect”;
  5. Also, set a default volume when activating the headphones;

Autoplay - Headset - Android - Spotify

When you connect your headphones, your chosen application will open in a few seconds.

What else can I do with Autoplay?

In addition to opening an app with a headset, another interesting automation mode that AutoPlay and its peers do is to create “unique profiles” for each Bluetooth device (can be a headset or a speaker) that has already been paired on your smartphone. Just touch “Individual” and “+” to adjust which one will have which destination on the device.

At first, the app will already identify audio devices that have been paired by Bluetooth with your phone. Choose one by one and select the application to open.

Different Headphones - AutoPlay

You can also rename devices to identify them more quickly and turn off Bluetooth to interrupt the connection with your phone that opens the application.

Note that this can make a mess if you usually use headphones to answer calls or listen to and send audios through WhatsApp, for example. You will have to close the application that opens automatically when you connect the headset. Consider the question.

Headphone types [learn how to choose the ideal model]

Check out what are the types of headphones, their main features and find out which one best suits your style

There are several types of headphones , each with a specific design and particularity: there are the small and portable, the large and the high quality, the ones that more or less isolate the ambient sounds and offer very different experiences.

Here, you can check which type of headset is the most suitable for your taste.

What are the types of headphones?

Regardless of the brand or sound quality, the headphones fall into four basic categories. Let’s get to know each one of them:

1. Earphones

They are the simplest type, which usually accompanies cell phones and audio devices. They are small, light and fit reasonably in the ears, but do not isolate the sound. Therefore, they allow it to leak and the user to hear ambient sounds along with the music. They are the most suitable for those looking for practicality without spending a lot.

2. In-ear headphones

Also called “in-ear” (inside the ear), these are the headphones that come with those erasers of various sizes, so that they are directly fitted into the ear canal. They are also small and light, but their design allows the sound to be better isolated and does not leak, also eliminating external noise. Because it is used inside the channels, it can bother some users and are not very suitable for use on the street, since you will not hear the sounds that surround you when walking.

3. In-ear headphones

The over-the-ear or “on-ear” headphones are those with a larger size, usually fixed with a bow and which are positioned over the ears, but do not cover them completely. Because of this, these headphones do not isolate the sound, but are less fragile than the earphones and in-ear headphones. The sound quality tends to be better than the first two and approach the next one on the list: the circumaural ones.

4. Circumaural headphones

For a long time, the synonym for “headphone” was circumaural headphones, also called “over-ear” (around the ear). These headphones completely cover the ears and isolate the sound completely, offering a better sound experience, even because it has bigger and better components. As negative points, these headphones are quite large and complicated to carry, besides being generally the most expensive.
